In 2018 we returned from gorgeous New Zealand!
First, we completed the 30-mile Tongariro Circuit on the North Island. Normally a 4-day hike with over 4,000 feet of elevation, we finished it in 16 hours, the last four of which were in the dark, with driving rain, while navigating a muddy, slippery mess of a “trail.”
A few days later, we trekked the 34-mile Milford Track in about 19 hours, also normally a 4-day hike.

While these endurance challenges provide a basis for our message of inspiration and overcoming perceived limitations, we get most energized when we are able to meet directly with children who are blind and vision impaired. Thanks to the support of the BLENNZ Foundation, met with children, parents, and teachers in Auckland, Te Anau, and Dunedin. The children asked direct and honest questions of Dan about how he handled losing his eyesight and his remarkable ability to grow and inspire others from such a loss.
Over the past 5 years, and with thesupport of our friends and family, we have raised over $100,000 to support children who are blind around the world. Starting in 2019, we will launch the TSP Global Scholarship Program to have an even more direct impact on the lives of highly motivated students with vision loss, eventually creating role models in local communities for breaking through perceived limitations. The scholarship program will start off by offering up to $5,000 scholarships to students who are vision impaired with the drive to go to college. |
