24-Hour Cycling World Time Trial

In November 2023, Dan Berlin and Charles Scott joined ninety-three other cyclists from around the world in Borrego Springs, California for the World 24-Hour Time Trial Championships. Riders completed repeated laps of an 18-mile desert course, finishing with a 5-mile loop and aiming to cover as many miles as possible within 24-hours. Representing Team See Possibilities, Dan Berlin and Charles Scott delivered an outstanding performance, using disciplined pacing and strategic rest breaks to power through the full day of riding.

From the Event

The crew played a crucial role in the team’s success. Sheila, Paola, Paul, Steve, and Brett supported the athletes throughout the long cold night, earning admiration from other teams for their well-run setup, complete with a propane heater and late-night s’mores. We thank them for their hard work and dedication that kept the riders moving hour after hour.

Sheila, Dan’s wife and an amazing member of the crew, described the athlete’s rest strategy:

“Strategy is everything. We saw how seriously Chris, Tina, and Roberta took this race and approached their timing and transitions. 24 hours is no joke but Dan and Charles used this race as a chance to stay in shape, get together, and do some good for Team See Possibilities. They came into the tent every lap for food, a nap, massage, physical therapy, and some rest.”

It’s always fun to see the tandem bikes that come to the 6-12-24 Hour World Time Trial Championships (WTTC). Seeing a well-in-sync team barreling around the course on one of these big rigs is impressive.

This year’s 24-hour tandem field saw each machine in its own category. Amassing the most miles of all was the age 50-59 duo Team See Possibilities with a tally of 271.2 miles. Charles Scott piloted from the front seat for his blind stoker, Daniel Berlin. Berlin was a member of Team Sea to See, the 4-tandem team that completed the Race Across America in 2018. The organization he founded, Team See Possibilities was founded in 2015 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that pursues the mission of inspiring and empowering young people with vision loss to thrive and excel. http://www.teamseepossibilities.com/our-story.html

Tandumb and Dumber was also a blind stoker and sighted captain, with Roberta Smith at the helm and Tina Ament as the stoker. Ament, who is a very accomplished triathlete, and was also a member of the Sea to See. Together they pedaled 216 miles, the same distance achieved by The McDougall Green Machine, retired US Navy Captain Jim Mc Dougall and Debbie Mc Dougall in the mixed 60-69 category. But Tandumb and Dumber reached that mark an hour and 10 minutes sooner than the McDougalls.

There were two tandems in the 12-hour, and both were in the Mixed 60-69 category, with Stephen Meichtry and Margaret Howell of the White Owl taking the win with 176.4 miles.

Team Skipper, Bernie Barge, and Pam Quillin were second with 90 miles.

The sole tandem entrant in the 6-hour was Generation Gap. The captain was Tom Guevara, who the day before put in 324 miles in the age 60-69 solo 24-hour race. The stoker was his  young grandson Trevyn Robinson who was clearly enjoying his day in the saddle—he was often seen sitting up and taking in the scenery, and even capturing a few photo memories with his phone. Together they put in 81.6 miles.
