New Zealand’s Toughest Tracks

In November 2018, Dan Berlin and his guides Brad Graff, Charles Scott, and Alison Qualter-Berna took on two of New Zealand’s most iconic and challenging ultramarathon routes, completing back-to-back challenges across some of the most breathtaking and unforgiving terrain in the world.

They began with the Tongariro Circuit, a 26.7-mile route through New Zealand's oldest national park, surrounded by three active volcanoes, with more than 6,000 feet of elevation gain. A few days later, they took on the 33 mile Milford Track, home to New Zealand's tallest waterfall and known as "The Finest Walk in the World." Both tracks typically require four days each. The team completed them in 16 and 19 hours respectively, pushing through rain, darkness, mud, and steep climbs every step of the way.

From the Journey

While these endurance challenges carry a powerful message about inspiration and overcoming perceived limitations, the team found their greatest energy in a different kind of milestone: meeting directly with children who are blind and vision impaired. Thanks to the generous support of the BLENNZ Foundation, Dan and the team visited with children, parents, and teachers in Auckland, Te Anau, and Dunedin. The children asked honest, direct questions about how Dan navigated losing his sight and how he found a way to grow and inspire others from that experience. Those conversations are at the heart of what Team See Possibilities is all about. Visit the BLENNZ website to learn more about their impactful work.

Making a Lasting Impact

Over five years, and with the support of friends and family, Team See Possibilities raised more than $100,000 to support children who are blind around the world. Building on that foundation, the TSP Scholarship Program launched in 2019 to create an even more direct impact on the lives of motivated students with vision loss, offering scholarships of up to $5,000 to help them pursue a college education and, in time, become role models in their own communities.
